Abstract
The Internet itself is designed to facilitate research among academic & military agencies. The internet usage has been rapidly increasing worldwide and has become an integral part of day-to-day life. College students are vulnerable because of the psychological and developmental characteristics of late adolescence & ready access to the internet. The internet addiction disorder (IAD) is a new kind of mental illness characterized by excessive, constant and misuse of the internet recognized by adverse reaction and compulsive behavior. Accordingly, familial, academic and occupational problems are the negative consequences. Aims of the work To reveal the prevalence, pattern, trend and the related factors of IAD. To explore the association between the IAD, negative consequences and the academic achievements of Alexandrian medical students. Subjects and Methods Research strategy: In order to achieve the research objectives, a stratified cross-sectional study was carried out Research settings: Faculty Of Medicine, Alexandria University during the academic year 2018/2019. Target population: Consented 400 students namely; undergraduates (from 1st to 6th year and intern) and postgraduates (fresh graduated tutors). Data collection tools and methods Self-administered semi-structured questionnaire consisting of data about: 1- Socio-demographic personal characters & academic achievement in the previous year. II. Internet use: A. Knowledge, attitudes & practice. B. Negative consequences (adverse reaction) III. The Young's Internet Addiction Test (IAT):
